As a staff writer and photographer I have covered a full range of hard news, sports, news features, and spot news.  The following is a sample of recent work as a freelance.

Sick BabyREPUBLIC OF MALI, WESTERN AFRICA-- This young boy was one of the hundreds seen in one day by a team from The Flying Doctors of America.  Diagnosed with severe malnutrition and complications from parasitic infections, the doctor struggled with how to tell his mother her son may not live much longer.  He was one of the few patients seen with life-threatening condition.

Two doctors and a nurse treated over 1500 people in three days of clinic operation.  At a separate site a dentist treated over 500 individuals.  In a country where local doctors conspire with pharmacists to prescribe costly medication and treatments, this group of Americans were very welcome.  Peace Corps workers translated the native Bambara language as other team members ran the pharmacy and acted as assistants and runners.

Riot at JRTC
FORT POLK, LA--Soldiers from the 1st Cavalry Division of Ft. Hood, Tx. try to defend a local official from an angry mob.  This was part of the experience at the Joint Readiness Training Center designed to train the 1st Cavalry for their upcoming peace keeping mission to Bosnia.

In addition to the JRTC OPFOR acting as various military forces in Bosnia, soldiers from several bases as well as civilians acted as civilians from the many ethnic groups the 1st Cav troops will meet during their mission.  Perhaps the most striking element of realism was the over 40 Bosnians refugees who played key roles as military commanders, local politicians, policemen, and other individuals the peacekeepers will have to interact with.  If the peacekeepers did not have a  "UN translator," also a Bosnian, they had to use their phrase books, drawings, and pantomime to make themselves understood, often under stressful situations.

Vietnam medals in soccerHO CHI MINH CITY--Jubuliant Vietnamese youths fill the Saigon streets after their national team took the bronze medal in the 1997 Pan Asia games.  Whizzing scooters carrying two and three people, often waving flags, circle Lam Son Square (formerly Constitution Square) as people on the sidewalks wave and cheer

This celebration was a stark contrast to the anti-Western demonstrations in Hué the previous week.  Instead of hanging a long-nosed Westerner in effigy, the people in Lam Son Square shared food with Western tourists.  In a country where most of the population has no memory of their war with the U.S., most Vietnamese are friendly and seem to be in favor of increased trade and exchange with the West, especially the U.S.

Costumers Union demonstrationNEW YORK CITY--Traffic stopped in Times Square as demonstrating Broadway costume makers filled the streets.  Demonstrations are nothing new to New Yorkers, but some of the costumes turned even the most jaded eye.

The main issue was the lack of health insurance despite the increased prosperity and profitability on the Great White Way.  Many productions are dependent on the skill and ingenuity of these costume makers.  However, there was no "unified voice" to represent management on this issue.

There were no reports of violence or confrontation during the demonstration, although it may have caused the odd case of whiplash as unsuspecting onlookers did doubletakes.
